May Day Protests in Sri Lanka - 2017

Back in 2017 I was sailing on a Maersk Container Ship that had a port call in Sri Lanka on May Day. This is unshared footage of the peaceful protests that occurred that day. Being that May Day was this week, I felt it was an appropriate time to share it. Channel update: I apologize for the lack of posting and updates. I am working another job right now after suffering a snowboarding injury this...

Straddle Carrier Port Cranes Are Super Efficient | Life At Sea
Просмотров 13 тыс.2 года назад
Straddle Carrier cranes are becoming more common in medium and large modern ports. They are much more efficient in the port than old style trucks with flatbeds and significantly reduce traffic jams and container backlog on the dock. The straddle carriers in this video are diesel electric hybrids at the Virginia International Gateway terminal in Norfolk, Virginia. #straddlecarrier #portcranes #l...
Engine Order Telegraph And Bell Book On A Cargo Ship | Life At Sea
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 года назад
The Engine Order Telegraph (EOT) is used to control the main engine's speed in RPM's. Orders on the telegraph are called bells since the old fashioned telegraphs would ring a bell down to the engine room for the engineers to see and then manually adjust the speed of the engine (like the scenes in the movie Titanic for example). Modern ship's telegraphs have direct control to the main engine fro...

Navigation Lights On A Cargo Ship | Life At Sea
Просмотров 19 тыс.2 года назад
Ships are required to exhibit certain navigation lights from sunset through sunrise. These important lights all have unique characteristics to let other vessels know what type of vessel you are and which direction you are facing. This information is very important for knowing how vessels should behave between each other in traffic situations or to let other vessels know your vessel is currently...
Super Freeze Shipping Containers -60 Degrees Celsius | Life At Sea
Просмотров 20 тыс.2 года назад
Container ships can carry refrigerated cargo containers (Reefers) that keep important cargo frozen or climate controlled by running off of the ship's electricity. Some of these extremely valuable cargos require extreme frozen temperatures to ensure they won't be damaged during transit. These special containers are called Super Freeze containers and typically are programmed to keep the cargo at ...

Traffic Situations On A Cargo Ship | Life At Sea
Просмотров 46 тыс.2 года назад
Ships often encounter various traffic situations with other vessels. There are strict Rules Of The Road for ALL vessels to follow according to the International Rules and Regulations Handbook COLREGS (Collision Regulations). Since ships are not nearly as maneuverable as small craft and typically can not adjust speed as easily, most risk of collision is avoided using course changes. In this vide...

I became a sailor at the age of 17, so for the first time I boarded a merchant ship as a deck cadet. Later I became a third mate, until I reached the age of 26, when I left the work at sea. 40 years have passed since then and I still occasionally miss the cruises (but definitely not the work at the ports). When I was a third mate, there was no electronic equipment in the bridge, as it is today and in the oceans, we navigated using the sextant, the chronometer and the compass. My profile has a photo taken 40 years ago, while i am using the sextant. I would love to be in touch with you.

All your videos are great and really give us non-ship or non-oceanfaring types a rare glimpse into the world of ship cargo transport: the long hours, the waves, the exposure, the hard work. I love playing this video in the background to give the feel of being on a ship in the vast ocean. It really gives one a feel for the sheer amount of energy and work needed to bring a cheap pink dildo from China to the U.S.

I never drive these sideways, might pick up or drop the container in that position due to better visibility, but driving a shuttle strad seen in this clip it's either face forward or driving back-end first. Driving sideways hurts both my brain and my spine/ neck/ upper body, for me that driving position is NOT ergonomic no matter what the manufacturer is saying.

If people realize the product they get are on ships and what it takes to get to them. They may take inconsideration of what it entails. Fascinating and humbling of where these people are, how they work, and the fact it is not that easy. I watched one of your videos that went from top to bottom and all that it entails. To imagine all that work put into building that ship and everything fits together to do the job it needs to do. Thank you.

A great look at what most of us never think about. Very complicated stuff on these ships, it must take a good amount of crew to make it all happen. The people that work on these must have to get some comprehensive training, those that maintain all this complicated machinery ditto. We almost never hear of disasters regarding these container ships so that is a good thing and a credit to the men and women who work on these.

Without containers below decks (in the holds) the ship would capsize.
